"It is well known by now that President Sleiman has adopted a stance in favor of convening a summit and the Cabinet called on December 30 for convening an urgent Arab summit on Gaza," Mitri told reporters.
He added that Qatar's call for convening an urgent summit "was not specifically tackled during the session."
The Cabinet on Tuesday also discussed clauses of the draft 2009 budget; Mitri explained that the ministers would convene again next Tuesday to pursue discussions on the budget.
Meanwhile, Speaker Nabih Berri flew to Istanbul Tuesday to participate in a conference for Islamic parliamentarians to discuss the carnage in Gaza. According to a report carried by the National News Agency (NNA), Berri is expected to meet with Turkish President Abdullah Gul, Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan, and the participating heads of parliaments.
The conference aims to adopt the decisions taken by the meeting of the Union of Arab Parliaments held in Tyre in late December upon an invitation by Berri.
Also on Tuesday, Defense Minister Elias Murr said the Lebanese Army would confront "any attempt to attack Israel from Lebanese territory."
Talking to reporters at Rafik Hariri International Airport upon welcoming his Italian counterpart, Ignazio La Russa, Murr said: "Those who fired rockets from south Lebanon [at Israel] are Israeli agents."
At least three rockets were launched from south Lebanon into northern Israel last week. Israel responded by firing five shells into southern Lebanon.
Murr also spoke of consensus among various Lebanese factions on "refraining from giving Israel a pretext to launch an attack on Lebanon."
He said he emphasized to his Italian counterpart that "Lebanese territories would not be a base for launching missiles and that we are seriously committed to Resolution 1701," which brought a ceasefire in the 2006 war with Israel.
"Lebanon is not a theater for war and this is a decision made by the government, the army, the resistance and the Lebanese people," Murr stressed.
For his part La Russa stressed Italy's commitment to continued participation in the UN Interim Force in Lebanon and support for the Lebanese Army.
La Russa made a quick visit to his country's contingent in the southern village of Shamaa.
Phalange Party leader and former President Amin Gemayel stressed the need to implement 1701 "in order to avoid reigniting tensions in south Lebanon and to protect the international forces deployed along the Lebanese-Israeli border."
Following a meeting with UN chief Ban Ki-moon's personal representative in Lebanon, Michael Williams, on Tuesday, Gemayel underlined the need for Lebanon "to do our best to show diplomatic and political support for the people of Gaza."
He also highlighted the need to preserve security in Lebanon, "since the country is preparing for parliamentary polls in June."
He also lashed out at Hizbullah, saying the party's behavior "proves they are against the building of a Lebanese state."
"We saw the massacres engendered by the strategy of resistance in Gaza," he added.
Williams in turn echoed the former president's call for the implementation of Resolution 1701, and expressed hope that upcoming polls in Lebanon would be held in a "transparent and democratic atmosphere."
Williams also met Tuesday with Lebanese Forces leader Samir Geagea at the latter's residence in Maarab, where the two discussed the need to make sure Lebanon avoids the repercussions of the conflict in Gaza, Williams told reporters after his visit.
