Mubarak biografia: l'ultimo faraone
|
Mubarak, che in lingua araba significa “Benedetto”, successore di Sadat, ha regnato per quasi trenta anni in Egitto, ma non avrebbe mai immaginato la sua fine.
In un Paese in cui si misura il successo di un politico per il numero di anni al potere, Hosni Mubarak avrebbe potuto ritenere la sua carriera soddisfacente. Ma c’è un giorno preciso che ha invertito la rotta della sua politica: è il febbraio 2011 e la storia dell’Egitto ha cambiato il suo corso. Detentore del record di longevità dei presidenti egiziani, aveva raggiunto la più alta carica a seguito di un disastro, l'assassinio di Anwar el-Sadat il 6 ottobre 1981 da un commando islamista. Il cambiamento di stile era in atto, il fascino di Mubarak avrebbe colpito gli egiziani.
Dopo l'esuberante e imprevedibile Nasser Sadat, gli egiziani e l’ Egitto avevano bisogno di novità. “Arrivò al momento giusto", scrive l'intellettuale Saad el-Din Ibrahim in una delle sue biografie che circolano in questi giorni. Hosni Mubarak iniziò la sua ascesa con la carriera militare.
Nasce il 4 maggio del 1928 a Kafr el-Meselha nel Delta, uno dei cinque figli di un ispettore del Dipartimento di Giustizia, anche lui, come Nasser e Sadat, ha dovuto seguire la carriera militare entrando fin da giovane a far parte dell'esercito. Pilota istruttore, si è addestrato in Unione Sovietica, dove si è qualificato come bombardiere. Torna a Mosca come studente alla famosa scuola di Stato Maggiore Frunze. Nel 1973, quando l'Egitto partecipa alla guerra di ottobre contro Israele, era il capo delle Forze aeree. Sarà uno degli artefici del primo successo egiziano, lancerà un attacco a sorpresa contro posizioni israeliane che Sadat nelle sue memorie ricorderà come "un atto epico, eroico e glorioso."
Nominato vice presidente nel 1975, inizia a fare i conti con il potere politico. Il presidente gli affida la direzione degli affari interni, la supervisione dei servizi segreti, l'acquisto di armi e contrattare le opportunità di arricchimento. Sale lentamente nella gerarchia del partito egemone, l'NDP (National Democratic Party), fino a divenatre vice presidente.
Quando Sadat viene assassinato, Hosni Mubarak è al suo fianco e subito dopo prenderà il suo posto.
"Una società egualitaria"
Mubarak regnerà senza modificare i punti principali di Sadat: pace con Israele, alleanza strategica con gli Stati Uniti, la liberalizzazione economica e ritorno sui risultati del nasserismo, come la riforma agraria. Mubarak prometterà una "società egualitaria, non una società di privilegi".
Politicamente, la storia del suo regno è però contrassegnata da una immobilità; molto pragmatico Mubarak è riuscito a mantenere un regime presidenziale forte, senza una vera opposizione parlamentare, emarginando i partiti esistenti, chiudendo il dialogo con gli estremisti e gli islamisti.
Il suo regno è contrassegnato dai numerosi arresti. L'Egitto sopravvive grazie alle sue risorse di petrolio e di gas in particolare, (è il sesto maggiore esportatore) ma la crescita non giova alla stragrande maggioranza degli egiziani, che continuano ad essere poveri.
I candidati rivali in carcere
Settori della sanità e dell'istruzione non decollano. Nel 2005, Hosni Mubarak viene rieletto con oltre l' 88% dei voti, ma stando alle cifre ufficiali, solo il 23% degli elettori registrati si sono recati alle urne. Per la prima volta, altri candidati erano stati autorizzati a correre per le presidenziali ma era per compiacere gli americani. Corruzione e favoritismi sono la quotidianità dell’era Mubarak. La società degenera in disperazione, come si racconta nel best-seller dello scrittore Alaa Al-Aswani, Palazzo Yacoubian, che descrive la realtà quotidiana dell’Egitto “mubarakiano”.
Il sistema è a corto di fiato. Le domande di autorizzazione della nascita di nuovi partiti sono sistematicamente negate. Il presidente lavora per essere sostituito da suo figlio Gamal, ma trova l’opposizione dell’esercito.
Nel 2000 e nel 2005, l'NDP riesce a mantenere la maggioranza integrando molti candidati popolari indipendenti. Tuttavia, la Fratellanza Musulmana, sempre eletta come "indipendente", diventa di fatto il principale partito di opposizione, senza essere però riconosciuto.
Centinaia di Fratelli Musulmani vengono arrestati tra il 2006 e il 2007 e le violenze e i soprusi non si fermano continuano fino al risveglio egiziano.
Alaa el-Aswani, autore di Palazzo Yacoubian, continuava a ripetere: “questo popolo è stato ritenuto passivo fino al punto di svegliarsi”. E’ il 10 febbraio 2011 quando Mubarak annuncia di aver trasferito i suoi poteri al vicepresidente Omar Suleiman, pur conservando il suo posto.
Troppo tardi: i manifestanti di Piazza Tahrir sono già scesi nella piazza simbolo della primavera egiziana. Per Hosni Mubarak inizia il travaglio: il suo patrimonio viene confiscato, viene arrestato e processato.
Eppure, oggi, appeso a un filo tra la vita e la morte, in quasi tutto l'Egitto ci sono migliaia di ritratti e migliaia di strade e piazze a lui intitolate. Come se la primavera araba non ci fosse mai stata e il faraone non avesse mai regnato. ..
