Balena grigia nel Mediterraneo. Mancava da più di 300 anni

balenagrigia ROMA- Era dal 1700 che non si avvistava la balena grigia, si pensava fosse estinta. Gli esperti hanno definito questo evento come un “terremoto”. Per ben due volte la balena è stata avvistata a largo delle coste israeliane suscitando scalpore e sgomento nella comunità scientifica.

Il problema riguarda sopratutto una specie di plancton, dalle dimensioni microscopiche, chiamata Neodenticula seminae. Questa pianta di plancton ha fatto il giro del mondo fino ad approdare nel mare nostrum, passando dall'Atlantico e dal mare Artico. Quest’alga ha portato con sé anche una varietà marina sconosciuta alla nostra fauna, come le balena grigia.

La balena grigia, uno dei più grandi mammiferi marini al mondo. Questa specie ha dovuto percorrere 30mila km prima di approdare nelle prossimità delle coste israeliane. Un tragitto estremamente lungo, percorso con una media di 15mila km l’anno.

La scoperta rappresenta, secondo la Sir Alister Hardy Foundation for Ocean Science, “la prima prova di una migrazione trans-Artica in tempi moderni” collegata al plancton e di conseguenza anche alle balene grigie, i ricercatori ammoniscono: “un tale spostamento geografico potrebbe intaccare la biodiversità e l’equilibrio degli eco sistemi dell’Artico, del Nord Atlantico e del Mediterraneo.” pancton

"Le migrazioni sono un esempio di come le condizioni dovute al cambiamento climatico spingano le specie a spostarsi o comportarsi diversamente, causando cambiamenti negli ecosistemi oggi evidenti”, sostiene Carlo Heip, direttore generale del NIOZ Royal Netherlands Institute per la ricerca marina, che guida il progetto CLAMER.

“Ma la maggior parte degli impatti sono decisamente negativi e la portata del cambiamento è talmente enorme che, nel complesso, questi impatti costituiscono segnali lampanti di avvertimento”, ha ammonito Heip.
