NAPLES - The first European centre for the Mediterranean with headquarters in Brussels will be called Meseuro and it will be opened on Wednesday February 24 in the presence of the speaker of the Italian Chamber of Deputies, Gianfranco Fini, and several deputies and European ambassadors from the Mediterranean basin. The news was announced in Naples by the vice president of the European Parliament in charge of the Mediterranean, Gianni Pittella, on the fringes of the meeting "Italy and the Mediterranean Union" at the Industrialists' Union in Naples. Pittella, who is a member of the Democratic Party (DP), explained that it is a bipartisan initiative that was created and managed together with the leader of the PDL party at the European Parliament, Mario Mauro. The centre will have several areas of competence, explained Pittella: energy, environment, sea quality, water, the control of migratory flows, border security, banking services in the Mediterranean. "We intend," said Pitella, "to concretely construct opportunities in the Mediterranean and to strengthen the cooperation not just from a cultural point of view as at present, but also from the point of view that is strictly practical." The first initiative, announced Pittella, will be a seminar on energy to which political interlocutors from the southern shores of the Mediterranean will be invited and who will have the chance to meet the largest energy company in Europe such as Eni, Enel and Edison. "On this occasion," Pitella explained, "they will be able to have a dialogue and understand which are the areas for cooperation in this specific sector that is so important for the economy and development of countries."(ANSAmed).
