BRUSSELS - The vote of the referendum in Slovenia for an agreement on the border dispute with Croatia is not only "an excellent result" for Slovenia, Croatia and for stability in the area in general, it is also "an example for the entire region that bilateral questions can be resolved in European spirit". This is the message of permanent EU President Herman Van Rompuy, in a telephone conversation with Slovenian Prime Minister Borut Pahor, the day after the referendum. The President of the European Commission, Manuel Barroso, has added that this referendum is "an important step forward" and "a significant sign for the region and for the relations between Slovenia and Croatia". The Slovenian decision in fact is a boost for Croatia towards the European Union. According to the President of the European Parliament, Jerzy Buzek, this vote "gives a new impulse to Croatiàs EU accession talks". Buzek thinks that "the Slovenians have taken a very wise decision on the border question and are now closer to a final solution of the question". This way, "Slovenia and Croatia have shown that shared solutions, also if reached after long and difficult negotiations, work. This sets an important historic precedent" Buzek continued. "As soon as Croatia enters the European Union, Slovenians and Croatians will live and work together under the same European roof, and borders will become much less important". (ANSAmed).
